What it's actually like
No packages you can't leave. No membership. Nobody calling you about a promotion.
Construct Fitness, a few minutes' walk from Telok Ayer MRT. One trainer — the same one, every session — a deliberately short roster, and a programme written around the assumption that you have a job. The rest of this page just describes it.
Every client gets —
- A full assessment before anything is sold. Movement screen, body composition, training history, and what your week actually looks like.
- A programme built for you. Same gym, same equipment, different plan depending on what you're for.
- Coached sessions. Technique corrected in the room, not diagnosed from a video afterwards.
- App-based coaching between sessions. Programming, tracking, and me on the other end of a message.
- Honest reviews. We measure. If it isn't working, we change it, and I'll say so first.
This works well if you're —
- Working in or around Telok Ayer, Maxwell, the CBD, Orchard or Somerset
- Short on time and long on meetings
- Someone who's trained before and wants structure rather than a fresh start
- Preparing for IPPT and out of runway
- Coming off physiotherapy and cleared to load again
Probably not for you if you want a training buddy or someone to hype you up. I'm here to make your ninety minutes a week count, and most of that time is quiet.
I'm Fred.
I started training properly during a stretch where I needed something to hold onto. Some habits that weren't doing me any good. The gym turned out to be the thing that stuck, mostly because it was the one part of the day I could actually control.
That's still how I think about it.
You get one session at a time. Most of them unremarkable. Enough of them and you're someone else.
NSCA-certified because I wanted to understand why things work on a much deeper level with regards to programme design and physiology.
I also built the app my clients train on. Started as a way to keep track of a handful of people. Got a bit out of hand.
Most of the people I work with are busy professionals who've trained before and want structure more than motivation. That's what I'm best at, and honestly what I enjoy most.
The roster stays short on purpose — one pair of eyes only stretches so far. If it's full when you message, I'll say so, and tell you when the next slot opens.
Say hi if you see me in the gym!
Twenty minutes, not a pitch. If I'm the wrong fit, I'll say so on the call. Prefer to talk? +65 8389 0446. Or size me up on Instagram first.
About the name
PHNX is a phoenix, and yes, that's on the nose. I built this during a period where rebuilding was the only thing on offer, and the name stuck because the idea underneath it is boring and true: you get one session at a time, most of them unremarkable, and after enough of them you're someone else. That's the whole philosophy. There isn't a second act.
What it costs
I'll tell you on the call — it takes about thirty seconds and there's no build-up to it.
I don't publish rates because the right number depends on how often you train and what you're committing to, and because a figure on a page tells you nothing about whether this is worth it. What I can tell you now: I'm not the cheapest option in the CBD and I'm not trying to be. There's no membership, no lock-in, no minimum term, and sessions are transferable.
If budget's a concern, say so early. I'd rather find something that works than waste your time.

You message me. WhatsApp, whenever. I usually reply within the hour.

The boring but important bits
Where — Construct Fitness, Telok Ayer. Walkable from Telok Ayer and Tanjong Pagar MRT, ten minutes from most of the CBD.
Payment — PayNow. Invoice on request.
Cancellations — 24 hours' notice and the session moves. Less than that and it's used. Sick or injured is different — just tell me.
If it's not working — tell me and we change it, or you stop. Unused sessions don't expire on a technicality.
